2027 Polls: Ogun West Professionals Seek Unity As Adeola, Monarchs, Leaders Storm Maiden Media Chat

Date:

Ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, a coalition of professionals from Ogun West Senatorial District has announced plans to convene a high-level media chat aimed at forging unity among political stakeholders and rallying support for a credible candidate from the zone.

The event, scheduled for Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Frontiers Hotel, Ilaro, is being organised by Ogun West Professionals and is expected to attract over 2,000 participants, including traditional rulers, community leaders, media executives and political stakeholders across the state.

Senate Majority Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District, is billed as the guest speaker, while the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation and Senator representing Ogun West, Solomon Adeola, a leading aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, will engage journalists and opinion leaders on his development agenda for the zone and the state.

The Chairman of the Steering Committee of Ogun West Professionals, Dr Yemisi Bamgbose, who is also the Executive Secretary of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, said the initiative was designed to confront what he described as the historic marginalisation of Ogun West in the politics of the state.

Bamgbose noted that since the creation of Ogun State in 1976, the governorship seat had rotated only between Ogun East and Ogun Central senatorial districts, leaving Ogun West — which occupies about 37 per cent of the state’s landmass and serves as a major economic corridor — without a shot at the number one seat.

“As the 2027 election draws nearer, we believe the time has come for Ogun West to speak with one voice. The biggest obstacle we have faced over the years has been lack of cohesion and unity of purpose among our political actors,” Bamgbose said.

He explained that the media chat would serve as a convergence platform for aspirants, professionals, artisans, civil society groups and community leaders to harmonise positions and build a formidable front capable of negotiating broad-based support from Ogun Central and Ogun East.

According to him, the professionals’ body, which boasts close to 1,000 members, has reached out to other influential associations and grassroots groups across the state to ensure inclusive participation and ownership of the process.

“We are not under any illusion that we can secure 100 per cent support for any single aspirant, especially in a multi-party democracy. But our goal is to ensure that aspirants from Ogun West emerge as flagbearers in key political parties, so that the people of the zone can ultimately decide who best represents their interests,” he said.

Bamgbose added that Senator Adeola was invited to the media chat to present his vision and policy proposals directly to the public, stressing that the engagement would allow stakeholders to interrogate the preparedness and capacity of those seeking to lead the state.

“The Ogun West Senatorial District has never produced a governor since the creation of Ogun State, particularly under the current democratic dispensation. This has largely been attributed to disunity among politicians from the zone,” he said.

He further noted that Ogun West is home to diverse ethnic and cultural groups, including Awori, Yewa, Anago and Ketu communities across Ado-Odo/Ota, Imeko-Afon, Ipokia, Yewa North and Yewa South local government areas, stressing that the professionals’ body was determined to mobilise these constituencies around a common political objective.

“With this media chat, we want to hear directly from Senator Adeola and allow him to outline what he has on the table for Ogun West and Ogun State at large, while also demonstrating that the zone is ready to organise, negotiate and win in 2027,” Bamgbose said.

The organisers expressed optimism that the initiative would mark a turning point in Ogun West’s long-standing quest for political inclusion and representation at the highest level of governance in the state.
