Ado-Odo/Ota Flags Off Measles–Rubella, HPV Vaccination Drive to Protect Children, Adolescents

Date:

Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, in collaboration with the Ogun State Primary Health Care Board, has officially flagged off the Measles–Rubella Vaccination Campaign and Routine Immunization exercise, aimed at protecting children and adolescents from preventable diseases.

The flag-off ceremony took place on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, marking the commencement of the vaccination drive across communities within the local government area.

The campaign targets Routine Immunization for children aged 0–23 months, Measles–Rubella vaccination for children aged 9 months to 14 years and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for girls aged 9–14 years.

Speaking at the event, the Health Secretary of the Primary Health Care Department, Dr. Jeleel Bakare, underscored the importance of timely vaccination in securing the health and future of children.

“Immunisation remains one of the most effective ways to prevent childhood diseases,” Bakare said, urging mothers and caregivers to ensure that all eligible children receive the required vaccines.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) representative, Mrs. Kalejaiye, expressed satisfaction with the turnout of mothers and children at the flag-off.

She encouraged parents to actively participate in the campaign and mobilise others within their communities to ensure that no eligible child is left out of the exercise.

Also addressing attendees, the Supervisor for Health, Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Razak Paul Oyekan, praised women for their central role in child upbringing and health.

He described the vaccination campaign as “one of the dividends of democracy”, urging mothers to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the government and to mobilise fellow caregivers.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Hon. Lawal Adewale Wasiu, FCA, described vaccination as one of the key benefits children receive through government intervention.

He noted that the exercise is scheduled to run for 10 days, with a possible two-day extension, and called on residents to fully embrace the campaign in the interest of the health and well-being of the future leaders.

The council chairman formally declared the vaccination campaign open, signalling the start of the exercise across Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government.
