The Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan has upheld Rt. Hon. Daisi Olusegun Victor Elemide as the legitimate Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, dismissing the appeal filed by the impeached former Speaker, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo.
In its ruling delivered today, the appellate court validated the impeachment proceedings that led to Oluomo’s removal in January 2024, effectively putting an end to the prolonged legal tussle over the leadership of the Assembly. The court found no merit in the former Speaker’s claims and affirmed that due process was followed by the lawmakers.
Oluomo was impeached by a majority of Assembly members over allegations bordering on financial impropriety, abuse of office, gross misconduct, and authoritarian tendencies. Following his removal, lawmakers elected Rt. Hon. Elemide as Speaker to ensure uninterrupted legislative activities.
The judgment reinforces the constitutional authority of the Ogun State House of Assembly and clears all uncertainties surrounding its leadership. With the legal dispute now settled, the Assembly is expected to fully concentrate on its legislative duties.
The ruling marks a significant victory for Speaker Elemide and the current leadership, strengthening stability and governance within the Ogun State legislature.
