NSC DG Rewards Outstanding Ogun Athlete with N3m, Promises Support For Young Talents

Date:

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has rewarded an outstanding Ogun State athlete, Miss Afsoh Majekodunmi, with a cash prize of three million naira in recognition of her remarkable achievements in athletics for year 2025.

The Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, announced the reward at a public presentation ceremony held at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Olopade said the recognition was part of the commission’s initiative to appreciate and encourage young Nigerian athletes who have made the country proud through their performance in international competitions.

He noted that Majekodunmi distinguished herself last year by excelling at the National Sports Festival, performing impressively at the African Athletics Championship (CAA), and winning a gold medal at the African Youth Games in Angola.

Olopade explained that the commission had also begun visiting different states across the country to appreciate athletes who contributed to Nigeria’s success in various competitions.

He disclosed that about 30 to 35 young athletes who excelled in sports last year would benefit from the initiative.

The NSC Director General stressed that rather than giving large cash rewards to underage athletes, the commission would focus on supporting their education, training, and welfare, including assistance for their coaches.

Olopade added that the initiative is aimed at motivating young Nigerians to pursue excellence in sports while assuring them that the country appreciates their efforts.

He said the programme is also designed to inspire more young talents across Nigeria to emulate athletes who have brought honour to the nation.

Also speaking, the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka appreciated thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving the reward system for the young local athletes.
