Egbaliganza to bring over 50 countries to Abeokuta

Date:

Cultura fiesta, Egbaliganza 2026, is set to take Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, by storm, bringing together over 50 nations, governments, and cultural institutions for Africa’s first true culture and fashion exchange.

The event is the brainchild of Lai Labode, and is expected to showcase the rich heritage, artistry, and fashion of the Egba people.

The festival’s centerpiece is the unveiling of the world’s tallest drum, the Alake-Egbaliganza drum, also known as the ‘Unity drum’.

The instrument is described as a symbol of Egba resilience and African unity, built using traditional Egba wood-carving techniques and modern structural integrity.
Egbaliganza 2026 aims to elevate indigenous textiles, particularly Àdìre and Aso-Oke, and showcase historic Egba garments and cultural artifacts spanning centuries. The festival will feature a Parade of Nations, Walk of Heroes, and Egba Fashion Club Runways, among other events.

According to Labode, who made the announcement during the week at an international press conference in Abeokuta, “the Unity drum is a gift to the Egba people and a living monument to Lisabi Agbongboakala, our symbol of courage, sacrifice, and collective will”.
The festival has received official recognition from the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, and is expected to boost Abeokuta’s economy and promote cultural tourism.
It will also feature performances by the Egbaliganza 80-man orchestral band, and the “Oja Egbaliganza” showcase, which will present historic Egba garments and cultural artifacts.

The event is expected to attract scholars, designers, journalists, and heritage tourists from across the world, showcasing Abeokuta’s rich cultural heritage.

It is supported by a Diaspora investment pipeline of over $2m, and aims to grow Africa’s culture and fashion valuation from $30bn to $500bn.

The festival will culminate in the “Gala Night: Flame of a Continent”, a curated evening of performance and storytelling, marking the moment Abeokuta becomes a global cultural hub.

Speaking further about the event, Labode said, “We are not just dancing; we are building an economy. It should also be noted that culture is not just a soft power; it’s a hard currency.”
