A civil society coalition, the United Actions for Democracy (UAD), has petitioned the Federal Government, urging the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to launch investigations into alleged criminal matters involving the Governor of Ogun State, Adedapo Oluseun Abiodun.
The body also asked the federal government to consider initiating legal and diplomatic steps that could lead to his deportation to the United States if the allegations are confirmed.
In a petition dated April 20, 2026, and addressed to the Attorney-General in Abuja, the group said its request was based on what it described as “publicly available records and ongoing legal discourse” suggesting possible unresolved financial and related offences linked to the governor in the United States of America.
UAD, a coalition of pro-democracy and accountability-focused organisations, argued that if the allegations are verified, they could raise “serious legal and diplomatic concerns” for Nigeria, particularly in relation to international obligations and the country’s global reputation.
The group also referenced ongoing court proceedings in Nigeria, specifically Suit No. FHC/L/CS/291/2026: Human Global Resource Initiative & 2 Ors v. Independent National Electoral Commission & 7 Ors, stating that issues arising from the case further underscore the need for judicial and administrative scrutiny.
Beyond the alleged foreign legal matters, the petition also raised additional concerns circulating in the public domain, including alleged misrepresentation of academic qualifications under oath, possible abuse of public office privileges, and purported associations with individuals linked to international financial crimes.
However, the group acknowledged that the allegations remain unproven and subject to legal determination, stressing that its call was not intended to pre-empt judicial findings but to ensure proper investigation and accountability.
In its demands, UAD urged the Federal Government to: conduct a comprehensive investigation into all allegations involving the governor, both within and outside Nigeria; engage relevant United States authorities to verify the existence and status of any pending criminal proceedings; activate appropriate legal and diplomatic channels where necessary to ensure compliance with international legal processes; and provide constitutional guidance on the implications of such allegations for public office holders.
The group said its intervention was driven by the need to uphold the rule of law, protect Nigeria’s international image, and ensure that no individual is above accountability.
The petition was also copied to the Embassy of the United States of America in Abuja.
As of press time, there was no official response from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation or the Ogun State Government
